Why Do Business in Decatur?

 Universal Joint pub in Oakhurst
The Universal Joint in Oakhurst, a popular restaurant at the intersection of Oakview and East Lake Drives, is a creative reuse of an old gas station.
The City of Decatur offers small town charm with big city opportunities. The City values locally owned retail and restaurant businesses that help create the unique character of Decatur's different commercial districts. Corporate retail and restaurant businesses have successfully opened in the downtown business district and complement the more traditional, locally owned businesses.

The Decatur Business Association works closely with the Decatur Downtown Development Authority and Decatur Development Authority to provide the private sector partner for our economic development program. The DBA boasts over 400 members ranging from small retail business owners to partners in larger law firms. The DBA meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month to network and showcase a different business location. The organization offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for its members and sponsors a number of the special events and concert programs that have become an important part of the Decatur community.

Decatur is a popular location for commercial tenants seeking up-to-date office space in a traditional downtown setting.
For the commercial office tenant, the City of Decatur provides the highest quality of life for business employees and clients. Decatur's office buildings and rental rates are competitive with other areas of the metropolitan Atlanta area. Business visitors and employees will find easy access to Decatur via Ponce de Leon Avenue, College Avenue, Clairemont Avenue, the College Avenue Corridor and the South Candler Street corridor. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) runs through our City and has three rapid transit stations within our city limits including one in the heart of the downtown district. Once a visitor or employee arrives at their destination, they have the opportunity to walk to a variety of retail, restaurant and service businesses on our attractive, tree-lined streets. Pedestrian and bicycling access is a top priority for our economic development program.

Ever dreamed of walking to the office? Decatur makes this option available too. Our downtown commercial district and the smaller neighborhood commercial districts are within easy walking distance of many historic, single-family neighborhoods. Over 600 new residential units have been constructed in the downtown business district and an additional 300 have been approved. Apartments and condominiums are available throughout the downtown business district. Trade in that daily commute that is often measured in hours for one that can be measured in minutes and find out what it is like to live and work in a place where "sense of community" is a way of life.

The Decatur Downtown Development Authority and the Decatur Development Authority (DDA) are available to assist any prospective business owner by locating space, providing demographic and marketing information and assistance with various permitting processes. City of Decatur departments and employees are easily accessible and are available to provide assistance to any one interested in opening a business in the City of Decatur.
